  12. This is a slightly revised (more detailed) version of my question of 
  13. yesterday.

  15. For only $30, a store around here is selling a Precision Instruments
  16. High Speed Controller Card (ISA Bus, 16c550), supporting 2 16c550
  17. serial ports, an ecp/epp parallel, floppy and game port, etc...

  19. I bought it because my old 386sx has an 8250 uart. That's the only 
  20. reason I got it.  I thought i could
  21. just plug it in (and disable the comm port on my motherboard).
  22. Well, it's easy enough to disable the comm port on the MB with jumper
  23. switches: i've done that before.   But i plugged in the card, attached
  24. the external modem to the serial port, turned on the pc, and it 
  25. wouldn't boot up: the A-floppy drive light stayed continuously lit
  26. and everything froze after the first second of turning it on (no hard
  27. drive action, either).  I took the card out, and it's fine.

  29. It must have something to do with interrupts or the fact that
  30. the card is also an IDE controller (that may conflict with the
  31. HD controller card i already have plugged in--not IDE, actually).

  33. But the user manual doesn't show any way to change any settings or jumpers
  34. on this new card, at least i can't see any way.
  35. The manual (a one page sheet) only says (in CAPS IS WHAT
  36. THEY SAY;  i put my comments in lower case):

  59. led usually means, but..)

  67. Then there are letters under the pin column, definitions like "ISA IDE 
  68. PORT EN/DISABLE, default's like "ENABLE (H)", and options like "DISABLE (L)".

  71. That's it!  If i could, i would disable anything related to IDE drive, since
  72. i don't want that interfering with my hard drive or floppy (both driven
  73. by non-ide controller cards in my pc).  But there's nothing at all on this 
  74. new controller card that can be "set" or "adjusted", at least as far
  75. as i can see.   I know that some internal modems let you change pin settings
  76. on the card by pulling out little pins and placing them somewhere else.
  77. This has nothing like that (unless i'm not seeing it), and i just stared
  78. at it for about 30 minutes!.  SHOULD THERE DEFINITELY BE SOMETHING ON THE
  79. CARD (A SWITCH OR SOMETHING, OR PINS) TO DISABLE THE IDE PART OF IT?
